Our neighbor's son was living near Gulfport with his wife and three
children. They left their home as part of the evacuation prior to the
arrival of Katrina. He worked at a local school and part time at a
restaurant. Both the school and the restaurant are gone, as is their
home. The two older kids are going to move to their grandmother's
house here in California and continue at the local elementary school
while their parents try to sort things out and build a new life for
themselves.
I am sure there are thousands of similar stories. No looting, no rapes,
no shooting at emergency vehicles, or decrying the lack of services, no
anarchy, just people trying to put their lives back together. I guess
that will never make the news.
