From House of warwick regarding manipulation of comments in Radio and Manila. I just want to point out that there are a number of changes and feature additions making it much easier to manage comments that are going into Manila 9.1 -- I am just not sure that they are going to help here, but will keep working on it.

Radio's Commenting System. Radio's Commenting System Userland's Radio has a handy comment system, allowing easy posting without requiring a name and password to post. Neat. That encourages conversations without too much of a limit. It's relatively well designed, considering it's age and ability to take a high load of comments. That's because it has a secret: it's really a Manila site. Radio comments can be hosted either by the Radio Community Server (RCS) or by a Manila site. As it so happens, a Radio Community Server and a Manila site have much in common which is good news in the fight to manage comments on a weblog. Manila site editors have the ability to delete discussion group messages. Good! Wait, isn't this about comments? Radio weblog comments are stored as Manila discussion group messages. Therefore, an ability exists for site editors to delete comments. Good again! So who is a site editor? When it comes to Radio's comment system, only the site owner is a managing editor and therefore able to delete comments. Is there a way to fix this? Yes and no. Yes in that there is a way to do it (there's always a way if there is enough will), but no in that it's not easy. The Radio commenting Manila site would have to be redesigned so that each usernum was mapped to a Manila site member. It would also have to be changed to allow that member to modify comments generated by that usernum's weblog. Right now, when you post a comment on a Radio weblog, your email address (fake or not) is used to create a member account on a Manila site. Yay! Now we're a member, but we are not a member that can delete comments. Boo! We have two directions to go at this point: editing a comment you made (possible but hard) and edit comments made about your weblog (next to impossible). Let's focus on the real goal of comment moderation. Manila's commenting could be easily modified to allow an edit link in the popup box, but that's a later battle to fight. If anyone from UserLand is reading this: You've already got the cookie on the computer, just add an edit button to that popup page. I'm breaking this up into a second post and might move it to a story later. More soon... [house of warwick]
