Tired of TiVo? Beyond Blogs? Podcasts Are Here -- The title of a piece in the NY Times about podcasting. What blogs did to print media - podcasts are going to do to Radio... does seem a bit crazy given the primitiveness of the technology and the rawness of the content.

I sat through a series of companies pitching early stage investors and was surprised to hear about the vast improvements in communications (read lower cost alternatives) technology coming ahead that will significantly increase battery life of portable devices etc. and it occurs to one that we are only a very few short years away from commercial delivery of small networked computers (we call them mobile phones now), that will display full motion video and sound and be capable of downloading all manner of personalized content via RSS,

I'm not talking about movies and TV shows, I am talking about content delivered via RSS that is purely personal - the conference session I missed last week available as a podcast, the video of the kids getting an award at school, the internal blog post about winning a new customer.

This has been possible for a while from a technical standpoint, but the content has never been there. Or, more accurately, an increasing market size (consumers) that drive technical innovation through the barriers created by established players. Don't believe me, check out Skype's deal with Motorola as an example. So we have the technology and the content getting there along with a means to efficiently consume it... reminds me this has happened before - quite recently - we often refer to it as the "bubble."
