Commentary: Clear thinking on content management. IBM's purchase of Green Pasture is another sign of a consolidating market. Here's how buyers should evaluate rapidly evolving strategies and capabilities. [CNET News.com - Front Door] ***
I guess my definition of content management would not be so traditional and would encompass far more then just "desktop information." It would include weblogs, RSS and XML all tied together in a common syndication format for development, dissemination, and tracking of information from "any" source, not just traditional file cabinets.
I would like to see the aggressive adoption of RSS across various business systems and applications. These could be for internal communication between business units or departments as well as external communication between customers, partners, and suppliers.
Engineering or product management teams can use RSS feeds and weblogs as a means of collaboration and communication with other teams such as sales or business development or manufacturing. This seems like the most effective way to track projects, competitors behavior, and any other defined task or development.
All organizations can leverage these standards and development methodologies more effectively if they focus on efforts to syndicate content when they are generating data. This data is not just human readable text, but data from manufacturing, supply chain systems, CRM, financial, and other sources that generate analytical data.
Of course, I also think that Manila best describes is brave new world for content management. No surprise there.
