Weblogs and Knowledge Exchange

The goal of knowledge exchange software is to provide an organization with access to the collective intelligence of the people that comprise it.  Collective intelligence refers to the combined experience of all the people in that organization.  Collective intelligence is only useful if others within the organization can access it and build upon it, not constantly reinventing the wheel and not making the same mistakes over and over again.  Itís a clichÈ, but its fundamentally difficult.

There is very little institutional learning capability in most organizations.  Its not inherent in the design of an organization.  A personís individual contribution is not valued until its lost and an attempt is made to replace it.  Redundancy is a common attribute in our organizations because we canít find and donít use what we have already created.

A personal goal for me is to begin to understand how software tools in an organizational setting can value the experience, knowledge, and understanding of individual contributors.  Its my belief that weblogs are an important component of this effort.
